Agriculture is the primary rural occupation in the Indian states of Maharashtra and Karnataka. However, there have been negative effects of the larger numbers of farmers working in the fields. Of the 114,000 cases of snake bites last year in India, there were 26,631 cases in rural parts of India especially these two states. In their own defence, the farmers end up killing all snakes, even though 95% of them are harmless.
Prasadam, an NGO working for the welfare of farmers and their families in these states, felt the need to find a way to protect the farmers without endangering the lives of snakes. While there are many local methods to keep the snakes away from entering human areas, the need of the hour was an innovative, easy to use, and cost-effective technological solution.
