Situation analysis

Flipkart continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the internet and the commerce ecosystem of India, and improving the quality of lives of millions of people across the farthest corners of the country. In order to do justice to this massive agenda, Sachin Bansal passed on the Flipkart CEO baton to Binny Bansal, to become the Executive Chairman in January 2016. This org change came under difficult circumstances – competition catching up close at the heels, a series of valuation markdowns and top-level leadership exits, followed by intense media scrutiny.

We conducted a pulse survey in this backdrop, to see how the announcement resonated with the employees. The results revealed that:

  • Only a staggering 28% of employees were clear about the business strategy.
  • Change fatigue was rampant and there was a huge trust deficit on the floors.
  • Employee morale –  there was widespread anxiety and decrease in productivity.
