The core challenge facing the Australian Defence Force (ADF) in 2015 was that recruitment numbers were falling and the needs of the 21st Century organisation meant that the ADF needed to recruit a far wider cross section of society and more people from a STEM background. Not only did engrained outdated and traditional perceptions of the ADF make getting people to even consider a career in the armed forces difficult, the long (9 months!) and arduous recruitment process meant that for those that did apply 9 in 10 failed to actually enlist.
