How Formula 1 innovated during lockdown

Formula 1, in common with other sports, has been forced by the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns, to reappraise its relationship with fans.

The 2020 Formula 1 season finally got under way in July with the Austrian Grand Prix, where the real world intruded as drivers led by Lewis Hamilton took a knee before the race start in solidarity with the #Black Lives Matter movement. Hamilton’s influence further extended to having his team Mercedes change its colours for the seasons to race in an all-black livery.

And it’s not just the drivers and teams that have been ringing the changes. The lockdown period also forced the Formula 1 organisation into some significant re-evaluations that will have far-reaching consequences for the brand.
