BBC World Service, an international news provider, leveraged existing datasets from its annual research project, Global Audience Measure (GAM), to reduce linear news output, place a greater focus on digital platforms, preserve its global audience, and preserve the programmes and platforms that deliver the strongest audience relationship.

Summary

Under increasing financial constraints following the freeze of the BBC license fee, the World Service was required to immediately reduce spending on international news content and services by £28.5m in 2022. To reflect the increasingly digital nature of news consumption around the world, the World Service's strategy was to reduce linear news output to place greater focus on digital platforms, which provides a better path to future audiences.
