Cultural Context
In February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in an escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War. 14 million Ukrainians fled their homes. 2.4 million residents lost their jobs. And the beloved melody of Ukrainian music was abruptly replaced with the echoes of war. Conflict displaced musicians from concert halls, performance venues were forced to close, festivals and tours cancelled, and strict curfews introduced. Musicians were robbed of their ability to perform, not only impacting the presence of music, but also the scientifically proven calming effect it can have when played and heard.
