US retail giant Walmart and TikTok, the video-sharing platform that is hugely popular among young consumers, are joining forces to test a feature that will enable TikTok users to shop for Walmart fashion items without having to leave the app.

Rationale

For Walmart, there is the potential to attract younger consumers through video, particularly live-streamed video, while TikTok stands to gain from developing a new outlet for its “shoppable product”, TechCrunch reported.

How does it work?

The two companies were due to host a special event, called ‘Holiday Shop-Along Spectacular’, last Friday evening with ten TikTok creators, including leading influencer Michael Le, showcasing their favourite Walmart fashion finds in their own unique ways.

Then, as fashion items are shown on screen, viewers could either use pop-up pins to add them to their cart before moving on to a mobile checkout or tap a shopping cart pin at the end of the event and select the items they would like to buy.
